Unlimited Personalized Support Anytime with Peer Tutors
Iowa State University’s Academic Success Center offers free, unlimited online and in-person tutoring services to help undergraduate students achieve their academic goals, succeed in the classroom, and graduate on time. Through a new collaboration with Knack, a leading peer-to-peer tutoring platform, students connect with tutors for in-person or online, one-on-one, or group tutoring sessions. Services are currently available for over 90 undergraduate courses. The courses available will vary each semester based on student needs.
Tutors are top-performing Iowa State students who have been trained in tutoring. Tutors have also excelled in the courses they are approved to tutor. This ensures high-quality, effective, and relatable support. According to the Academic Success Center, 98% of students using tutoring say that they are more academically successful.
Tutoring services are offered during all Iowa State academic terms. Students may request a tutor on the first day of every semester. Once a request for a tutor is submitted, students can expect to receive responses from available tutors within 24 hours.
Then, students book sessions through the Knack platform at times that work for both the student(s) and the tutor. Students and tutors can determine how often and how long they meet.
If tutoring is needed but not offered for a course, students can take advantage of other academic resources. These include Supplemental Instruction, help rooms, or office hours with their professor or teaching assistant. For writing or public speaking assignments, students can schedule an appointment with Writing and Communication Consultations, another free service. Additionally, the Knack platform allows the Academic Success Center to collect data on the courses that students request tutors for, which will allow the Center to pivot its offerings and provide support that students need in real time.
